There is exactly one thing in this book that bothers me.
It talks about David Tennant doing promos for Doctor Who–
In June. Of 2005.
That would have been four months into the reboot of Doctor Who, when Christopher Eccleston was the Doctor and about two years before David Tennant took his place.

Thanks for reading! Appreciate your support/interest, and believe it or not, your attention to detail. I’ve gotten this question 2 or 3 times before, but when I’ve replied to it I’ve never heard back from those who inquired. I don’t know if this is because my answer satisfied them and they felt no need to follow up or if they just never came back to the feed to see if I had replied. Anyhow, I’m copy pasting one of my previous answers below, let me know if you find a flaw in my logic:
I’d be surprised to find my timelines off as I researched them rather thoroughly. That, and my wife, the avid Doctor Who fan, double checked them. Still, my logic for this fictional ‘promotional event’ wasn’t necessarily straight forward. I believe I had thought it out as follows (Jumps away from blog to double check Wikipedia and IMBD):
-Tennant replaced Ecceleston at the very end of “The Parting Of The Ways.” Which would have premiered June 18, 2005.
-At this point, it wouldn’t make sense for Ecceleston to be doing promotional work for a show he was no longer the star of, as David Tennant would be the person taking over in the next season. I don’t know if filming/production on said season hadn’t started of course, but I do know that the up-and-coming Doctor Who is always announced/known/leaked to the internet well in advance of the premiere of his debut episode. So my thought is, if Ecceleston or Tennant was going to be promoting the series (or establishing their face as the new Doctor Who) at the time where the events of The Never Hero are taking place, it would have been Tennant.
Hope that is a satisfying answer 🙂 I admit, I had trouble being positive on this, spent a few hours researching it when I wrote it down and then came back to it a couple times through out various drafts to make sure my reasoning still felt solid. Its possible that Ecceleston was doing Doctor Who promotional events right up till his last episode premiered, but I had to make a call.
In other news, I am about half way through the new Jessica Jones netflix series so far, and I’m enjoying Tennant’s Kill Grave 🙂 Was a little worried as the first episode was pretty rough, but its been all uphill since then.
I just finished the never hero and really enjoyed it!! I went to buy the next book as it said that it would be available in 2015 and couldn’t find it…has it been released yet? If not, can you tell me when I should look for it? I usually try to preorder the books I am really looking forward to reading so I don’t miss them when they come out.
I think you have a wonderful premise and I was really happy that even the supporting characters were fleshed out and I could cared about them also. I read a lot, almost a book a day, and find a lot of authors don’t even make their main characters as relatable as you did with the supporting cast.
Again, I really loved your book and look forward to reading as many as you release over the years…I know you not only have Jonathan’s story in your head, but many more!!

I’ve been working on the sequel since about a month before The Never Hero was published. Unfortunately, I hit a lot of set backs around May. Mostly a result of a job change that has a much longer commute. It ate into the timeline I originally imagined far more substantially then I was prepared for.
Currently, I am in the revision phase of the first draft. I try not to make any promises on when it will be done. In the end, “its done when its done,” and trying to give a reliable date is very difficult to gauge. I usually do three drafts before sending it to the editor.
Anyhow, I do have a website I’ve built for sequel updates and an email list that is used ONLY to notify readers of new book or audiobook releases. In other words, you won’t get spammed, you’ll only hear from me once or twice a year.

Hi T. Ellery, I was browsing on Amazon and came across The Never Hero completely by happenstance. I clicked to view a sample and did not want to stop reading! Your book is great and it is hard to believe it is your debut novel. I can only imagine the heights you will achieve with ten years of experience behind you.
While I think it is admirable that you want to keep people informed don’t stress about it overly. A brief update monthly or quarterly should suffice. I am of the opinion that authors don’t OWE their readers anything except the best storytelling they are capable of producing. To my mind that is all inclusive. Even if you have beta readers or an editor, take the time to do a final read before uploading your book for sale. There is NOTHING worse than being pulled from the story by careless grammatical errors. I am SOOOOOOO happy to say that I have not had that problem with your book so far.
If the sequel is as good as the first, it will have been well worth the wait. I am happy to hear that you are getting back to your flow. Sorry about the carpal tunnel, really hope you can avoid the surgery. I would look into a good dictation program, quickly. When you factor in the copays for the medical treatment, the pain, suffering and down time it evens out the difference between the higher end programs and the less efficient bargain brands. Just finished the sequel. Worth the wait, as I enjoyed it every bit as much, if not more, as I did the first book. Only 1 thing from the book proved to be enough of an irritant that I wanted to reach out concerning it. The weapon used by Rylee is referred to several times as a rattan. I am familiar with the term when used to describe a material from which some weapons are commonly made, most notably the baston stick weapon used in the Filipino martial arts of Escrima/Arnis/Kali. However, I had never heard of a specific weapon itself being referred to by that term. I was curious as to whether the use of the term rattan was a mistaken use of the material name in place of the weapon name, or if there is a weapon by that name with which I was unfamiliar.
Hi Chuck, good to hear from you and glad you liked the book. My understanding was that it was the name of the weapon used in Escrima. Unfortunately, if I miss used the word its a little too late to change it. I’ve practiced a few fighting styles in my life, but admittedly everything mentioned from Escrima in the series was second hand knowledge (researched but not something I ever actually practiced). Thanks for letting me know, I’ll keep it in mind while writing the finale.
First I wanted to thank you for creating such a large and detailed world for all of us readers, never have I read a book with so much “science” behind the fiction, and genuine life lessons/philosophy. I really can’t express in words how much both of your books hit home with me!
Anyway I was wondering what kinds of books you have read that may have given you ideas or just books in general that you have really liked. I am really like the whole thing of an average person/underdog rising to do great things but I have a lot of trouble finding books with that quality but also have good detail and a captivating story. My favorite books (other than yours) are the Eragon series by Christopher Paolini and the Super Powereds series by Drew Hayes, if you have ever heard of any of them. Other than books you have liked I was also wondering if you might know of any other books you would recommend to those who really loved your books or have any sources/forums in mind where I could find more great books or authors.
Hi Nathan, if you liked The Never Hero, another book came out about the same time called Contractors, by Andrew Ball. Its a similar story but Ball went more magic and less sci-fy.
If you’ve never given them a go: Kurt Vonnegut, Christopher Moore, are more insightful less action. Jim Butcher, Kevin Hearne, Brandon Sanderson are more fun and action.
Course, I get most my ideas after reading nonfiction. I could recommend a lot on that front if you’re interested.

I have had an idea in my head the last 3 years that I just kind of keep adding to, not sure about trying to turn it into a book any time soon but any ideas would be great and obviously just reading good books is always worth while. 🙂
Ihave the audio book editions of the first two books but Audible does not have The Never Army. Is the audio edition in production and when can I expect it to be available?

Hi T. Ellery, just finished the trilogy. I really like these books. One thing has me puzzled the prologue to the third book, what does it have to do with the story? Did I miss something that relates it to the books? Thanks for the great writing, looking forward to more of your writing. Leslie
